In the paper, a
part of the research performed at the University of Ljubljana, aimed at better
understanding the elastic and inelastic seismic response of asymmetric
structures, is summarised. The influence of the most important structural
parameters are studied on idealised single-storey structures. A model with three
elements in each of two orthogonal directions is used. The model is asymmetric
with respect to both horizontal axes. No specific code requirements were taken
into account. Rather, some limit cases of strength distribution are
investigated. Analytical expressions are derived for the determination of
elastic response of structures subjected to ground motions defined by response
spectra. Elastic response spectrum analysis, as well as linear and nonlinear
time-history analyses have been performed on a number of test structures. The
response parameters studied are displacements. Comparisons are made between
elastic and inelastic responses. The difference between the behaviour of
torsionally stiff and torsionally flexible buildings is discussed. The
difference between the behaviour of torsionally stiff and torsionally flexible
buildings is discussed. The influence of the type of eccentricity is studied.
Furthermore, the response of structures subjected to bi-directional and
uni-directional horizontal excitation is compared. From the results of analyses
several conclusions are drawn. They are based on a very limited number of test
examples. Nevertheless, at least some of them seem to be generally valid. The
most important may be the observation that fair estimates of the response to
bi-directional ground motion can be obtainedby the SRSS combination of responses
to two independent uni-directonal ground motions [COBISS.SI-ID 756833]
