The seismic response of an existing
14-span viaduct and of several simplified four-span viaducts, designed according
to Eurocode 8/2, has been analysed, and the results of several elastic and
inelastic analyses have been compared. Based on these results, the applicability
of analytical methods (the single-mode spectral method, the multi-mode spectral
method, elastic and inelastic time-history analysis) has been discussed. Since,
within the scope of Eurocode 8/2, the criteria for the choice of an appropriate
method for analysis of the viaduct in the transverse direction are not clearly
defined, an attempt has been made to provide sme guidance as to this choice.
Some important parameters that influence the response of viaducts have been
identified. They are: the ratio between the stiffness of the deck and that of
the bents, eccentricity, the ratio between the torsional and translational
stiffnesses of the viaduct, and the type of constraints at the abutments. An
