This paper contains the conclusions and
recommendation of an international workshop on seismic design methodologies,
which was held in Bled, Slovenia, on June 24-27, 1997. The objective of this
workshop was to contribute to the development and implementation of new
approaches for the design of new building and bridge structures and for the
evaluation and strengthening of existing structures. The Workshop provided a
valuable forum for the exchange of research results and ideas on issues of
importance to seismic risk reduction and the development of future seismic
codes. The purpose of the workshop discussions was to assess the
state-of-the-art in performance based seismic engineering, define the future
directions for the development of seismic design methodologies, and identify
