To date, two
information-centred approaches have been taken to achieve computer-integrated
construction (CIC). In the 1970s and early 1980s through the standardization of
the information formats, such as IGES and later DXF. Since late 1980s conceptual
models are being standardized within ISO and IAI. A third possibility is to
standardise the interfaces and the APIs, more precisely, the languages in which
the APIs are defined, not the actual APIs and even less so the datastructures.
The approach was first demonstrated using the middleware technologies, such as
Corba. Recently similar ideas have been implemented in a much more portable and
accessible technology based on XML and the so-called XML protocols. The paper
presents the experiences with the prototype where such service level integration
was tested. We conclude that service level integration is a powerful method and
a shortcut to CIC [COBISS.SI-ID 1701729]
