Research & development in the area of computer integrated
construction has examined various parts of the domain to be used to bind the
profession together. Examples include product and process models. In this paper,
an environment-modelling approach is suggested. It provides a more comprehensive
overview of the entire environment in which human activities (that should be
supported by information technology) take place. An environment-modelling
framework is proposed, which decomposes an abstract concurrent engineering
environment into several modelling spaces. For practical reasons, 2-dimensional
orthogonal framework decomposition is used. Along the first axis, the framework
is decomposed according to the modelling aspect (construction, information
system, generic). Along the second axis, it is decomposed according to the level
of detail (neutral, aspect, application). In this paper, we present the
decomposition criteria, the resulting framework, and some essential components of
the environment. The conceptual work carried out as part of the European Union's
ESPRIT project ToCEE is also reported [COBISS.SI-ID 1663585]
