Damage due to extreme loadings
such as earthquakes and terrorist attacks, as well as the high cost of
removing/repairing damaged structures have emphasized the need for more
cost-effective earthquake and blast resistant methods for infrastructural
retrofit and new construction. While laboratory studies show that High
Performance Fiber Reinforced Concretes (HPFRCs) are well suited for this
purpose, conventional materials have been primarily used up until the present.
HPFRCs exhibit high strength and ductility, high fatigue resistance, high
durability, and excellent spall resistance, and are thus ideally suited for
cost-effective renewal of the deteriorated national infrastructure. This paper
reviews recent developments in the use of continuous fiber-mat HPFRC called
SIMCON in structural retrofit an new, seismic resistant construction. Necessary
tools for material-level and structural-level design are provided. Finally
seismic behavior of a composite HPFRC structure is analytically predicted and
compared to that of a conventionally designed, seismically resistant reinforced
concrete frame building. [COBISS.SI-ID 1521284]
