In the recent years more and more engineers got a comfortable
access to the Internet. A European Union's 5th Framework project - Intelligent
Services and Tools for Concurrent Engineering (ISTforCE) - is focusing on how
this could change the way they work. To date, the Internet was a communication
platform (email) and a source of information (Web pages), but was not used as a
place where actual engineering work would get done. One of the goals of ISTforCE
is to design a services platform through which engineers at a given design or
consulting company will access the services on the Internet and collaborate
inreal time. In this paper, we were exploring a special angle of that idea.
Weclaim that is possible to creatye infrastructure on which real construction
companies and virtual teams of construction companies can rent and customize
services on a project by project basis and where providers of engineering
services can market their products. This infrastructures is considered a
vertical service that an ISP (Internet service provider) offers to its
engineering clients, just like they offer email accounts and some space for Web
pages today. We believe that such infrastructures will be central to future
integration of the profession. In the paper, we analyze the key requirements
towards such a service, present the components that constitute it, elaborate the
design criteria and present a prototype. In the conclusions, we speculate on the
possible pitfalls of on-line collaboration services [COBISS.SI-ID 1253217]
