With the final workshop in April 2004 in Ljubljana the project SciX came to a successful end. We coordinated an excellent team including the Swedish Business School of Finland, Icelandic Building Research Institute, e-business company Indra (Spain), Technical University of Vienna, the FGG Institute (Slovenia) and the University of Salford (UK). The process model analysis defined a formal model of scientific publishing and identified the key barriers. It was found out that it is the learned societies and professional institutes that could make a difference in the transition from closed, commercial scientific publishing, towards open access scientific publishing. Software to support various kinds of open publishing such as organizational archives, topic libraries, peer reviewed journals and conferences was developed in the project and implemented in services such as CUMINCAD (figure above). The SOPS package (SciX Open Publishing Services) is available under an open source license, together with in depth reports from the project at www.scix.net. |
