Potres je zahteval najmanj 15000 življenj in 15 milijard
ameriških dolarjev škode. Konstrukcijski sistem v večini porušenih stavb je bil
neduktilni okvir, zapolnjen z opečnimi votlaki. V članku obravnavamo značilno
obnašanje, poškodbe in rušni mehanizem takšnega sistema. Drugi pomembni vzroki
rušenj so bili urbanizacija področij nad aktivnim prelomom, utekočinjenje tal in
pogreznitev obale vzdolž Izmitskega zaliva. Tako obsežno škodo ne bi pričakovali
v deželi, v kateri že desetletja veljajo sodobni predpisi za gradnjo potresno
odpornih konstrukcij. Žal pa je imela zakonodaja očitno kaj malo vpliva na
gradbeno prakso
Earthquake claimed at least 15000 lives and 15 milliards
USD damage. Most collapses occured in non-ductile reinforced concrete frames
with hollow clay tile infills. Typical behaviour, damage and collapse mechanism
of this structural system is analysed in the paper. Other major causes of
destruction include the urbanisation above the active fault line, liquefaction
and subsidence of the waterfront along the gulf of Izmit. It was surprising to
seesuch extensive damage in a country, which has got a modern seismic code since
several decades ago. However, codification of earthquake resistant design
apparently had little influence on construction practices [COBISS.SI-ID 810593]
