| Summary: |
Damage to
buildings and transportation structures, caused in highly populated area of the
City of Cobe, Japan, by Magnitude 7.2 Hyokoken-Nanbu earthquake ofJanuary 17,
1995, is discussed. Although peak ground accelerations of more than 0.8 g and
velocities of more than 0.5 m/s have been recorded in the area, adequate seismic
behaviour of buildings, designed by Japanese seismic code of 1981, was observed.
However, a large number of collapsed and heavily damaged buildings of all types
emphasized the problem of retrofitting existingengineered buildings, old by
criteria of modern aseismic design. Poor behaviour of old and new transportation
structures, designed by seismic codes, indicates the need for revision of seismic
codes for bridges and elevated highways [COBISS.SI-ID 330593]
