Summary: Paper refers to moderate seismicity region of Slovenia and neighboring Alpine countries (northern Italy, Switzerland, and Austria). Experimental and analytical research, as well as practical applications in the region are presented. Main topics include mathematical modeling, comparison of analyticalmethods, new design procedures, issue of irregularity, design for high and limited ductility, seismic isolation.The way, these topics are addressed in Eurocode 8/2 is analyzed. Several models and procedures of different level of sophistication are analyzed and compared against experimental results on large-scale bridge specimens, tested pseudo-dynamically at the European Laboratory for Structural Assessment (ELSA) in Italy. Limited ability of the standard flexural macro elements to model bridge pier behavior is identified. Inelastic time history analysis appears to be the only appropriate solution for complex, irregular and important bridges. Regularity index is proposed to estimate the (ir)regularityof a bridge.
